Women for Independence

Why we support Independence

Barbara Evans, Lenzie

My name is Barbara. I am a mother of 2 and have 3 grandchildren. I have lived all my life in Scotland my mother having coming down from Barra to Glasgow when she was a child.

I was brought up in a culture where my dad went out to work and my mum stayed at home looking after the kids, then when things got tight my mum went to work, but always came back to more work where as my dad popped off to the pub when his ‘work’ was finished. At the time I never noticed anything wrong with that as it was the way most working class people lived.  As the years went on and I had a family of my own it began to dawn on me that women have drawn the short straw when it comes to equality. Today we are 19th in the top countries for women, definitely not where I would expect us to be. Hence my involvement in Independence for Women

When I first started to vote, I naively believed when you voted everything would change, all the wrongs would become right if the majority voted for the same party as you……. these MP’s could do miracles because they were always there in the papers and outside polling stations promising things would get better if you voted for them. But of course that never happened and maybe that’s where people become disillusioned and stop voting. There doesn’t seem any point when lots of people believe “Politicians will say anything to get your vote, and then just as quick, they will sell you down the river”

An Independent Scotland to me is a chance to regain the trust of the nation, to listen to peoples voices and act upon their wishes for a better future. A future, where as a nation we can be proud that we respect and treat everyone equally from the cradle to the grave, in order to do this, all cards need to be put on the table not up our sleeves.  We need honest politicians who have to prove themselves and remember we are a democracy and our collective will must be expressed.
