Women for Independence

Why we support Independence

Carol Hainey, Glasgow

I’m Carol Hainey, a public sector worker in Glasgow.I have supported independence since the 1980s when Scotland voted Labour, but got a Thatcherite Tory government due to the democratic deficit. Now with the Tories in power again, it seems like history is repeating itself. I’m relieved that we now have a devolved government, but even so the protection this offers to national treasures like the NHS is only partial. It’s time the Scottish people had a say in our own destiny. We should decide on issues such as whether we have nuclear weapons, a monarchy, or whether we ever go to war again. There is scope for Scotland to be a modern democracy. We can all be involved in shaping this. It’s not just up to Alex Salmond.

One of the things that terrifies me the most about the status quo, is the impending Tory benefit cuts. This was decided in Westminster and we have absolutely no control over this under devolution. There will be at least £100 million of benefit cuts in Glasgow alone. Women and the families they care for are likely to be the biggest losers.

I love being involved with Women for Independence because the women are so diverse and talented and we have lots of fun. We want all the women of Scotland to be involved in deciding Scotland’s future. I believe that women, with their shared values of support, cooperation and caring can contribute more to creating an inspirational modern democracy in Scotland than a bunch of selfish Etonian Toffs. Every woman in Scotland is welcome to get involved.”
