Women for Independence 
Why we support Independence

Folk might wonder why this group is needed. After all, there is a well-funded, high profile Yes Campaign for Independence. Quite simply, for me, there was no other way I could see how my voice, as a woman, would be heard. And I was fed up watching ‘independence’ being debated by men in grey suits, through a very narrow lens of party rhetoric. And I don’t think it helps to immediately force people into two polarised camps. There’s a lot of listening to do: about people’s concerns, and, especially and specifically, women’s concerns about the future.
The polls make clear that more women than men are not yet persuaded to support independence. They’re not exactly bowled over by whatever arguments in favour of independence they are hearing.We want to have a full and open discussion about what kind of country we want to live in. What kind of democracy. It’s up to the people to decide - and women are people. We demand an equal say. So, this group wants to LISTEN to women and bring women together to organise for our own independence as well as that of the nation.
I love that this group is as wide as its name. I love that we intend to reach out to ALL women – stretching over pre- existing boundaries of parties, geography, social group, identities. I love that we have very diverse reasons for supporting independence. I love that we all agree independence needs to be better for women.I’ve had my own, quite personal, struggle with politics and being active. It’s taken me a while to even consider dipping my toe back in the water. I know I won’t be the only woman who has felt excluded.
The kind of independence I want will enshrine women’s equality in all spheres. But, as always, it will be up to women to ensure that happens. So, into the breach once more! For too long, women have had to struggle in communities, workplaces, trade unions, political parties, the media – everywhere - to even earn the right to speak. Well, we’re just going to do it – and no-one will stop us!
