Women for Independence
Why we support Independence
Kate Higgins, Edinburgh
I want independence for Scotland because I want freedom. Not, though, in the Braveheart sense! What I’d like is freedom to choose to be different, to apply our own solutions that best suit our country and its people and needs. To be free to make our own decisions, to build a more sustainable economy in harmony with our natural resources, to create a more caring Scotland which looks after all its citizens and to determine to rid ourselves of the pervasive poverty which blights our people and our communities. And making these decisions requires a different attitude, a confidence and a self-belief, which can only come with full autonomy over all our affairs.
I grew up believing that one day, Scotland would be independent. I’ve believed in it all my life and I used to say that I wanted my children to grow up in an independent Scotland. One is now a man, the other will soon be a teenager. I still want this for them. But now what I’d really like is for my parents to see a life’s work and campaigning reach a successful conclusion. We have a moment in time in 2014 to choose freedom. I hope we all do.
