Women for Independence
Why we support Independence
Susan Lyons, Caithness
Iām Sue Lyons, 48 year old English woman living with my husband in the Highlands. I have lived in Scotland since 1997 when I moved from Rochdale to Caithness. I am a stay at home mum to my two youngest children who are 4 and 2 and I also have three older boys aged 23, 22 and 17. I volunteer for a variety of different organisations to do with supporting people, I write a bit - mainly political blogging - and I spend my summer weekends re-enacting life as a medieval wifie during the Scottish Wars of Independence with the Historic Saltire Society.
I absolutely support Independence because I believe it is the best chance we have to improve the future of people in Scotland. We have the chance to focus on Scottish priorities and give our children ā all our children ā a real opportunity to be part of a fair and responsible society which encourages everyone to achieve their potential. I think Independence is our best chance to create a nation which we can be proud of and which we can influence through our democratic right to vote in a way we are unable to do as part of the UK. I am part of Women for Independence because I understand that many women are disassociated from the world of politics and therefore it is difficult for their voices to be heard. I think that women have a massively important role to play in the Independence debate and I want not only to be part of that but also to encourage other women to be part of it too. It is exciting and empowering and fascinating.
